Personal Loan vs Credit Card EMI — Which Costs Less?
A ₹2-lakh purchase costs ₹4,500 more on card EMI vs a personal loan. Here's the math + when each option actually wins.
The headline numbers
For most ₹2-lakh purchases over 24 months, a personal loan is cheaper than a credit-card EMI conversion by roughly ₹4,500 in total cost. Personal loans in India price at 11–14% p.a. with a 2% processing fee, while card EMIs sit at 13–16% p.a. with a 2–3% conversion fee plus GST — the fee gap alone is ₹3,900.
Card EMI: 13-16% p.a. + a 2-3% processing fee + GST. Personal loan (₹2L, 24 months): 11-14% p.a. + a 2% fee + GST. On a ₹2-lakh purchase over 24 months, that's ₹9,500 vs ₹8,900 — the loan is ₹600 cheaper on interest alone, and another ₹3,900 cheaper on fees.
When card EMI actually wins
Credit-card EMI beats a personal loan in three specific situations: (1) you need money within the next 24 hours because cards disburse instantly while loans take 4–24 hours, (2) the purchase is under ₹20,000 which falls below most personal-loan minimums of ₹50,000, or (3) the merchant is running a zero-cost EMI promo like an Amazon or Flipkart sale.
Three cases: (1) You need the money in the next 24 hours — cards are instant, loans take 4-24 hours; (2) The purchase amount is < ₹20,000 — most loans have a ₹50,000 minimum; (3) You have a card-brand promo like 'zero-cost EMI' on a specific merchant (Amazon Great Indian Sale, etc.).
The hidden card trap
Converting a card purchase to EMI locks up that portion of your credit limit until every instalment clears, which can spike your utilisation ratio above 90% and hammer your CIBIL score by 40–60 points. Personal loans sit outside the card ecosystem — they never touch your card limit or utilisation and therefore leave your credit-card headroom intact.
'Converting to EMI' locks in your credit limit — that ₹2L converted purchase blocks ₹2L of headroom until every EMI clears. Your utilization can spike to 90%+, hammering your score. Personal loans don't touch your card limit at all.
