Business Loan Eligibility for MSMEs · 2026 Checklist

The public checklists say '2 years vintage + 40L turnover'. The real underwriting looks at 12 signals — here's the full list.

Business Loan Eligibility for MSMEs · 2026 Checklist

The three tiers most lenders segment into

Lenders sort MSME borrowers into three tiers. Tier 1 needs 3+ years of vintage, ₹1 crore-plus turnover, clean GST filings and a 750+ CIBIL score — priced at 12-14% p.a. Tier 2 accepts 2 years and ₹40 lakh turnover at 16-19%. Tier 3 fintechs approve as low as 1 year and ₹20 lakh, but charge 19-24% p.a.

Tier 1 (bank-quality): 3+ yrs vintage, 1 Cr+ turnover, GST-compliant, CIBIL 750+. Rate: 12-14% p.a. Tier 2 (NBFC-quality): 2+ yrs, 40L+ turnover, occasional GST filing gaps. Rate: 16-19% p.a. Tier 3 (fintech-quality): 1+ yr, 20L+ turnover, bank-statement-only. Rate: 19-24% p.a.

Signal #1-4 · Bank statements

Underwriters run pattern analysis on the last 12 months of business account statements. They look for four deal-breakers: monthly deposit volume trending under 3× the proposed EMI, more than 3 minimum-balance breaches in 6 months, round-tripping between owned accounts (fraud flag), and inward-cheque returns — each bounce costs about 30 points of internal score.

Underwriters run pattern analysis on your last 12 months of business account statements. They look for: (1) monthly deposit volume trend (must be ≥ EMI × 3), (2) minimum-balance breaches (deal-breakers if > 3 in 6 months), (3) round-tripping between accounts (fraud flag), (4) inward-cheque returns (each one = 30 points off internal score).

Signal #5-8 · GST + ITR pattern

GST turnover and bank turnover must line up within 15% of each other, else the file is flagged for verification. Lenders also want your ITR-declared profit to sit at 25% or more of your GST turnover. Any missed GST return in the last 12 months automatically pushes the applicant to Tier 3 pricing at 19-24% p.a.

GST turnover vs bank turnover mismatch of > 15% raises a flag. ITR-declared income vs GST turnover: they want ITR ≥ 25% of GST turnover as declared profit. Filing regularity: any missed GST return in the last 12 months bumps you to Tier 3 pricing.

Signal #9-12 · The soft signals

Beyond hard numbers, four soft signals move the file: vintage of the operating address, number of employees on EPFO, industry-risk class (jewellery and real estate score high-risk while SaaS and essential retail score low), and — for proprietorships or partnerships — the applicant's personal CIBIL score, which still carries roughly 30% of the underwriting weight.

Vintage of operating address (rental agreement or ownership deed), number of employees on EPFO, industry-risk classification (jewelry, real estate = high-risk; SaaS, essential retail = low-risk), and the applicant's personal CIBIL score (yes — for proprietorships + partnerships, personal credit still weighs 30%).
